A Guide to Classic Horror Movies To Watch This Month: Part 1


From vampires and werewolves to witches and demons, here's a rundown of movie ideas to keep you watching all Halloween

100 Years of Horror chronicles the history of movie horror from the earliest experimental chillers through to the unforgettable "golden age of movie monsters," and on to the graphic horror films of today.

To get some good ideas on what to watch this month (or just learn more about how this genre emerged), start here with these 13 docs:

  1. Dracula and his Disciples: Cinematic portrayals of Bram Stoker's Count Dracula, including those of Bela Lugosi, John Carradine, and Christopher Lee.
  2. Blood Drinking Beginnings: Blood-drinking beings, most notably inspired by Bram Stoker's novel and how different filmmakers found new ways of reinventing the concept of the vampire.
  3. Frankenstein's Friends: Classic films based on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein focuses on portrayals of the monster by Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi, and Glenn Strange.
  4. Baron Frankenstein: The Frankenstein franchise after 1950, and how the conception of the Monster shifted over the years, ushering in a whole new era of horror.
  5. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: The many film interpretations of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde explores the different versions and adaptations of the story, along with different actors' interpretations of the characters throughout the years.
  6. Werewolves: The history of the werewolf film, focusing on the work of Lon Chaney, Jr. and Michael Landon.
  7. Bela Lugosi: The life and career of Bela Lugosi, who was most famous for his performances as Dracula. In spite of other legendary portrayals by John Carradine and Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi proves to be the face and the voice linked to his most famous role, Dracula.
  8. Boris Karloff: The life and career of Boris Karloff, who's most famous for his performances as Frankenstein and quickly became the face of mystery and terror.
  9. Ghosts: Movies about ghosts, haunted houses, and the paranormal. 
  10. Phantoms: Films based on the Phantom of the Opera and the Invisible Man, focusing on Lon Chaney's performance and the different versions and characterizations of these themes throughout the years.
  11. Witches: Cinematic portrayals of witchcraft and paganism, focusing on how historical references of witchcraft were imagined on screen over the years.
  12. Demons: Films focusing on the Devil and demons, notable performances, and how different interpretations of the demon were conceived over the years.
